Eternal Silver

A TypeScript reimplementation of the Lunar engine

Alpha testing
Playable on

Eternal Silver plays Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete from your own disc, as a desktop app and an Android app. The title, the towns and the world map, people, doors and scenes with their voices, music and movies, fights, the field menu, shops, saving and loading: the story from its opening on.

It is also an engine for Lunar games that anyone can mod, the way RPG Maker is for its own. The Silver Star Story is one game built on it, and mods add to it or stand beside it.

Built to be modded

The Silver Star Story is a base game on the engine’s public API, made the way any mod is made. Mods add to a game or stand beside it as games of their own: Hello Meribia, a small game made of data alone, shows how.

Includes

Battle Arena

Replay your favorite battles… or create custom ones! Even a mirror match.

Replay your favorite battles…
A mirror match: the party fights its own double
…or create custom ones!
  • Faithful by design

Transcribed from the decompilation, which is the reference whenever there is doubt. The aim is “effectively perfect”: a difference a player would notice is a bug.

  • Your disc, your data

Nothing of the game ships with the app. It reads your own disc and makes the game’s data on your machine: a data pack, one per disc, never shared.

Playable on

Walk every map and click the people standing on it, watch every sprite and monster animate, read every line of dialogue with its portrait, listen to the soundtrack and every voice line, look up items, spells and monsters, watch the movies, and save any picture or song you like.

A free desktop app. It reads disc images you make from your own discs, never changes them and never goes online.

SSSC Decomp

The game’s program, decompiled to matching C

On GitHub

A matching decompilation of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PlayStation, North America, 1999): C source that, compiled with the compilers the game was built with, produces the same bytes as the original program.

“Matching” is a checked claim, not a description. make builds each program and compares it with the original byte for byte, and ends with an OK line, or fails.

None of the game’s files are in it. The build cuts the program out of your own disc image, keeps it only if its sha1 is the one the tree declares, and takes from it the bytes not yet written as C.

$ make
OK: 0xa8000 bytes, sha1 900ce6a9dfa9563ef7e0a129602945d1303436d8
100%
of the main program’s functions to decompile are C
99.58%
of all its code, Sony’s libraries included
2,154
of its 2,321 functions named, each name on record with where it came from
3
programs: the game, its movie player and the bonus disc

Functions to decompile, in C

  • Main executable SLUS_006.28, the game itself 100.00%
  • Overlay MENU.BIN, the movie player 97.06%
  • Bonus disc SLUS_009.21, “The Making of Lunar” 95.21%

    out of scope for now

Measured by make status on 2026-10-20. “To decompile” leaves out what was assembly in the original and Sony’s library code still read as bytes.

How the main executable was matched, Jul 23 to Oct 10, 2026: the share of its functions and code bytes matched each day, and the functions landed each day by method. Automation took the small functions; reading took the code.

From the first match to the last function in eleven weeks

  1. Jul 23

    First matches

The compiler is pinned down as GCC 2.8.1 at -O2 -G8, and the first 67 functions match, one at a time.

  2. Aug 2–10

    Drafts in bulk

Splitting the code again uncovers 515 functions glued inside others. m2c drafts them, and a ladder of searches mutates each near-miss until its bytes match.

  3. Oct 2–7

A local LLM and a LAN fleet

A 27-billion-parameter model on one desktop GPU drafts what m2c could not, and the searches spread to a laptop.

  4. Oct 8–10

    One agent per function

Claude Code agents read the assembly and write the C, one function each: 959 functions and 73% of the code land in two days.

Preservation, done right

Bring your own disc

Nothing of the game is in any of these projects: no disc image, no file from a disc, no program image. You make images of the discs you own, and each tool builds what it needs from them, on your computer.

  1. Own the game

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete for the PlayStation, the North American release. The Asset Viewer also reads the Japanese one, and Lunar 2 in part.

  2. Image your discs

Copy each disc with a disc-imaging program as a .cue file with its .bin files: a raw copy of every track.

  3. Play and explore

Eternal Silver builds the game’s data from your disc, the Asset Viewer reads it, and the decomp checks its build against it.

Questions

Asked and answered

Do I need my own copy of the game?

Yes. None of these projects hold any of the game’s files. Eternal Silver and the Asset Viewer read disc images you make from your own discs, and the decomp’s build takes the program it compares against from your disc image.

What does “byte-matching” mean?

The decomp’s C, compiled with the compilers the game was built with, produces the original program exactly. Every build checks it, byte for byte, and fails if a single one differs.

How faithful is Eternal Silver?

It is transcribed from the decompilation, which is the reference whenever there is doubt. The aim is “effectively perfect”: a difference a player would notice is a bug; one only a machine can measure is fine.

Can I make mods?

That is the point. Eternal Silver is an engine for Lunar games, the way RPG Maker is for its own: a mod can be a game of its own, an add-on to a game, or a data pack. The Silver Star Story itself is built on the same public API. Battle Arena and Hello Meribia show how.

What does it run on?

Eternal Silver: Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The Asset Viewer: Windows, macOS and Linux.

Is it free?

Yes. Each project is free and open source, and the author’s own work in it is MIT-licensed. The games are their owners’, and nothing of them is in these projects.

Is this an official Lunar project?

No. It is a fan-made project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Game Arts or GungHo Online Entertainment.
